Turkey Day

I had a most memorable Thanksgiving at my house in Payson, Utah. It was Rachel and myself, my sister Charly and her six children, and even my visiting brother Keith from Las Vegas with his whole family (Laina and three children).

Rachel had been a busy bee doing most of the food preparation in the days leading up to Thanksgiving, and I knew she needed a break. So on the morning of Thanksgiving while most of the family were sleeping in, I took Rachel for a ride in the Prius up the scenic Mt. Nebo canyon road.

On the way up the canyon, we saw wild turkeys in the historically famous Walker Flat meadow. That was a first for me, because usually we just see deer or elk. On the way back down the canyon we came to the big meadow again, but this time there was a wild turkey in the road. Rachel jokingly said “5 points if you can hit it!”

I took her up on the challenge, but the turkey was on to me and ran up against a fence on the meadow side of the road, too fine to pass through. I wasn’t about to ram my car into the fence so I just drove on past it.

Rachel again taunted me saying I should’ve grabbed it. So I put the car in reverse until we reached the turkey still at the side of the road. I sprang from the car toward the turkey and tried to catch it, but I was surprised when the turkey took to flight across the road, instantly too high for my reach. I marvelled as I returned to my car because the domestic turkeys I’ve had before could barely walk, let alone fly. I thought I could glimpse Benjamin Franklin’s perspective for wanting the wild turkey instead of the bald eagle as our national bird.

Just as I was opening my car door, I heard a huge booming sound, like a falling car hitting the bottom of a cliff. The turkey hit the window above the front door of the A-frame house across the road and down the hill. We watched as the turkey twitched its last twitches, then layed on the doorstep, dead.

Rachel said, “Go get it!”

We drove down the driveway, I scooped up the dead turkey, and passed it into the car to Rachel. We drove home and showed the family (Charly and her kids) our Thanksgiving turkey!

Little 5-year old Marquessa wanted to hold it. While I setup in the laundry room to hang the turkey upside down from a rope on a hook and butcher it over a garbage can, Marquessa watched a DVD and stroked the dead turkey on her lap like it was a favorite teddy bear.

I asked Marquessa if I could borrow her little friend. 20 minutes or so later I came back with a stack of tail feathers and said, “Here’s your change.”

In my little autopsy, I found a broken neck and bruising in the breast meat on both sides of its ribs. So if the broken neck didn’t kill it, the crushed chest cavity did. It was as if the turkey was thinking, “Wait, don’t kill me. Let me do it!”

It was all very funny, and on Thanksgiving of all days, we were blessed with a turkey! I’d love to say it tasted good, but its still in the freezer because we already had a turkey cooking.

Tonight’s reception

It won’t quite be a Bar-B-Que afterall. Rachel will be supplying chili cheese dogs and making her own version of a wedding cake. Beyond that, its a potluck. Dress casual. Weather forecast is, “Sunny. Highs in the lower 70s.”

Almost Done!!

We are planning a very casual reception Monday the 27th at Gordon & Trudy Peck’s home (back yard if weather permits), 132 N 500 E, Payson, UT 84651. It will be at 6-8pm. It is a potluck. So bring somthing to share. Can’t wait to see you there

Just Married!

We got married, and it has been an adventure. At the drive-through chapel a Hummer limo was at the head of the line, followed by a dozen or two Harley Davidson motorcycles, and then us in our shiny red little Toyota Prius. The wait was long, but it gave us more time to enjoy the scene.

Here now is a 9 minute long, 8.3M MP3 audio of the wedding ceremony I recorded via a digital recorder on the dash of the car. In the driver seat was me, Roger, then Rachel in the passenger seat. In the back seats sat my niece/maid of honor Anastasia, my dad (John Brown) as the Witness, and my best man Miguel Ramirez that I’ve known since the first grade.

I didn’t have a camera, so what pictures I can share with you are contributed by others. Click here or on the photo below to access my new and growing photo gallery. Oh by the way, if you have pictures too, please register with the photo gallery and upload your favorites too.

Wedding Day!

It’s about 5am and we’re about to head out the door for Las Vegas. We have people commuting to Las Vegas from as far away from San Marcos, California. People are renting cars from places that don’t open until 9am, and are getting oil changes. If you figure 5 hours of drive time from 10am (9am Pacific) then the earliest they’d arrive in Las Vegas would be about 3pm. With delays, add an hour or more. So here’s the plan…

Let’s all meet at my brother Keith Brown’s house at the following address, then when everybody arrives, let’s go down to the wedding chapel together.

Keith Brown, 5376 E Bonanza Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89110 [Map]

Either before or after the wedding (depending on the time), Rachel is gonna make dinner for everyone at Keith’s house. We’ll be having something called Hawaiian Haystacks (whatever that is).

I better hit the road. See you there!

What a Man!

We did it! We officially Registered @ Target. My very Good Friend Aubrey helped me register at Target. (I got the addresses a little bit messed up. Using my old A.F. address instead of new Payson address. But it’s all good. Aubrey lives at the A.F. address and will take care of any gifts that come there.) The link to the target registry.

Poor Roger was persuaded into registering at Bed Bath and Beyond. He was extremely wonderful, and only grumbled half the time when I couldn’t decide on colors for different rooms. I give him kudos for this because he hates shopping with me. Which is why I had arranged for Aubrey to register with me. But because of outside circumstances were only able to register at Target that day.(My butt still hurts from falling out of the tree and landing on a shovel, especially when walking around a lot)

Our Bed Bath and Beyond registry on which the addresses are correct.

And For the girls who want to know our colors are as follows

Kitchen: Apple Red and Sunny Yellow Bathroom: Chocolate Brown and Sky Blue Bedroom: Blues,Tan, Brown and other complimentary colors Living Room: Cream and Mist Blue

I can’t wait to see you at the reception!!!

Our first date, first kiss, and engagement

Rachel and I carpool to work. This morning, as we do every Monday, we stopped at the grocery store to do some grocery shopping. I stopped at the gumball machines, paid $0.25 for the perfect engagement ring, and secreted it into my pocket before Rachel could get a good look at it.

After work, I officially asked Rachel to join me on a date (a first). She knew I was going to propose today, so she asked that however I decide to do it, that I should make it a surprise. I grumbled at my circumstance, having no time apart from her to conspire. I even told her my idea, which was to have a scarecrow in the yard with a sign saying Marry Me and the engagement ring around its neck. We went straight home and did the usual chores and dinner with the family.

After dinner with the family, I took Rachel to see a movie in the theater called The Flyboys. Great movie, by the way, especially the skydiving scene.

It was dark by the time the movie let out. While driving home, I started talking about maybe proposing on the Full Moon instead. Rachel, convinced I wasn’t going to propose afterall, was just beginning to let me have it when my headlights caught their first glimpse of a scarecrow in the front yard.

She fell silent and waited for the lights to give her a second look. I pulled into the driveway and the headlights lit up a scarecrow. Her first words were, “I hate you!” And then she started with this weird laugh that was kind of like hysteria and crying all at the same time. After a few moments we came to the scarecrow and there it was. A sign saying “Marry Me Rachel -Roger Brown” and the $0.25 engagement ring hanging on a silver chain around its neck.

The family came out from hiding (I texted them when the movie ended) and they stood in the doorway, taking pictures and laughing with Rachel. She was giddy as a schoolgirl, and definitely surprised. I got on one knee and popped the question while she put on the ring. I stood up and we had our first kiss.

Rachel wanted to know how I managed the scarecrow. While she was getting ready for our date after dinner, I had a quick pow wow with my nieces Tasia and Sami and gave them the ring. While Rachel and I were at the movie, the family went to work on the scarecrow and sign. Sami even donated her necklace chain to the cause.

I love my family. Go team!

We would appreciate all the help we can get

We have had several friends asking what they can do to help us. I personally appreciate this since I don’t have any family in Utah. For our reception we are having a potluck Bar-B-Q. We will be providing the main course. But it would be extremley helpful if those who are planning on coming claim a dish to bring from the following list. This way we can fill in any specificley needed items. If you could bring enough for 20 that would be excellent. Don’t worry if someone else has signed up for what you wanted to bring. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Rachel puts the ball and chain on Roger

I challenged my family to an artwork contest to go on wedding invitations because I’m too cheap to pay a photographer. This was a submission by my nephew, Timothy Ellis. I think it’s perfect. Click the image for full size.
